Luke van der Smit | HKRU Men's Player of the Year Award

By Grant Beuzeval

Second Season Rookie Snaps Up the Big Prize

“He's been sick for the past few days. I asked him for 40 minutes. He'll give me 80” Brett Wilkinson | Sandy Bay Senior Head Coach

In a premiership rich with top quality No. 8’s - one stood out.

Week in, week out – the big Namibian was a standout for the Sandy Bay Prems. Luke would be the first to say that winning the Grand Championship was a team effort but this award is thoroughly deserved.

Post-season, Luke impressed the South China Tigers selectors, securing a spot in the squad for the Global Rapid Rugby tournament and must now have one eye on representing Hong Kong in 2020.

Luke was not lost for words, "It’s a huge honour to get this award,it’s been a long journey so far but could of not done without the support from the club, team/coaches and the Mitty. This a award has made me even more eager to come back next season and put on a good show with my team mates..... up the Bay!"
