With a number of our players unavailable and some others heading up to SKM to help our Raider brothers, the bat signal was raised during the week and some of the old boys answered the call.
The Marauders were coming off a draw last week and confident that we could bring the fight to everyone’s nemesis, Football Club Expendables. The opening stanza proved this as we trucked the ball up the field with great forward pod work and a back line running onto the ball and certainly not afraid of the crash ball back into the defenders.
Good possession and ball control lead to the first try to our giant ginger Will Binnie. We were away and playing well but the Football club hit back to even things up at 5-5. The 2nd half was an arm wrestle until a turnover and 70 meter dash saw the Football club gain the lead 5-12. Marauders came back with the perennial JJ Bull crossing the line to bring us within 2 points at 10-12. The weary Marauders team dug in and marched up the field again with minutes to go but could not quite get into range for a goal attempt (required to be dead in front and 10 meters out) or a try so the score remained 10-12 to the bad guys.
Whilst we didn’t get the win we showed a lot of courage and strength to stick to the game plan and push through what as a very tough day in the office. We picked up a few injuries throughout the game but the guys continued giving 100% when called upon. Given our opposition had come from a grade above we are confident we are on track and look forward to squaring the books when we play them later in the season.
Encouraging signs from all of the new guys including Harrison Standish, resulted in him being heavily fined on the post game bus trip to SKM which he may not fully recall today, and some of the old boys including Rodders, Pyott, Shandy and the old bull Coatesy. Let’s have everyone back to training this week lads as we are overdue a win.
