Sandy Bay, supported by MindHK and sponsored by Herbert Smith Freehills, are tackling mental health for the entire Hong Kong rugby community

“As a result of stigma, neglect and underfunding, the majority of individuals experiencing mental health issues remain undiagnosed and intreated, resulting in enormous health, social, humanitarian and economic consequences.” - MindHK

Mental Health statistics in Hong Kong are very concerning. To make things worse, the city lags far behind others in providing support and treatment, conducting research and smashing the stigma associated mental health.

The lifetime risk of a mental health problem global is 1 in 4 individuals
As a result of stigma, neglect and underfunding, the majority of these individuals remain undiagnosed and intreated, resulting in enormous health, social, humanitarian and economic consequences.

  • 1 in 7 people in Hong Kong experience a common mental disorder as of 2018
  • Only 26% of those with mental disorders are seeking professional help
  • Suicide remains a leading cause of death among youth in Hong Kong with children below 15 years old taking their own lives.
  • 40% of survey respondents aged 11 to 30 have had suicidal thoughts due to stress
  • 53% of Hong Kong secondary school pupils displayed symptoms of depression

Progress in Mental Health in a population cannot be made without tackling the issues of stigma and discrimination. To curb these is a challenge to the entire society, not just patients and professionals.

Through training, sharing, communication, support and love – we can all make a significant impact on those around us – our friends, families, clubmates, colleagues and - importantly - ourselves.

Sandy Bay RFC has recently conducted a 4-year strategic plan with one of the following goals - Promote a culture of physical safety and mental welfare for all

MindHK is one of the leading NGO’s working in the Mental Healthcare space, doing amazing work for the community. One of Mind HK's core goals is to raise awareness through workshops, training sessions, and talks, in order to increase awareness and understanding of mental health in Hong Kong.
