Attack beginning to click after four tries seal the bonus point

Sandy Bay arrived at King’s Park knowing that the difference between a win and a loss would have a dramatic effect on their league position. By late afternoon, to the relief of all involved, they were sitting pretty in second position being one of only two clubs enjoying a positive points-difference this season. Nothing was easy however with Sandy Bay again having to work harder for their points by outscoring the opposition on the try count without landing any conversions. Unnecessary penalties were punished by the accurate boot of Kowloon’s Harry Johnston which kept them within striking distance for much of the match. Dean Roussouw continued his scoring streak by going over in the corner after the Kowloon defence were stretched to breaking point by clinical phase play and quick recycling of the ball. Ben Davey again demonstrated his effectiveness as a ball carrier by crossing the white line before Gair Currie scored undoubtedly the pick of the tries. In what is becoming increasingly rare these days it occurred from first-phase play with Tertius Kruger, having moved to inside centre, piercing the Kowloon defence before executing a perfect off-load to send Gair Currie into space. There was still a lot of work to be done however but as Kowloon scrambled to contain the Bay’s support runners Currie offered the merest hint of a dummy which was duly bought, opening up a path to the line. A fourth try was scored added by Tom McQueen, whose sharp finish provided some much-needed breathing space.

The post-match atmosphere smacked of relief rather than jubilation in acknowledgement that it is still very much a work in progress with tweaks still required at the set pieces. A cheekbone injury to Jak Lam meant that coach James Rees had to put in a lung-busting shift for the full 80 minutes and when Ben Davey limped off he was replaced by new recruit Lewis Wilson who demonstrated a surprising lack of rustiness after such a long lay-off from rugby and pointed to perhaps what he will be able to bring to our pack as the season wears on.
From a broader club perspective it was fantastic to have four sides on show at Kings Park, all showing admirable discipline off the field when it came to appropriate distancing and behaviour. All eyes now turn to next week when we take to the hallowed turf of Aberdeen for the first time this season where will see three men’s teams as well as the mighty Storm in action.
