HKU Sandy Bay took on Kerry Hotel Kowloon on Saturday, and thanks to some incredible defence in the dying minutes, the Prems were able to record their first win of the season.
Kowloon came out the gates stronger, having the majority of the possession in the first twenty but it was Sandy Bay who were the first on the board thanks to a dominant scrum and a Jack Metters long ranger. Kowloon equalised a few minutes later before Tom Macqueen, who had come onto the park for Nik "I'm the best looking Kiwi in the team" Cumming, scored his first try in about 2 years.
The boys from the dark side scored briefly before the half to take the lead, however after a vintage half time chat from Coach Wilko you could see things were different to previous weeks, and it was the Bay who scored the only try of the 2nd half. Matt Lamming the recipient of Jack Metters assist, ironically something Metters needed later on in the night in LKF.
At 16-13 to the Bay with about 15min to go, with Sandy Bay supporters very well hydrated on the side, Fai Mika entered the fray. The big man made an epic hit in the dying minutes to help the Boys shut down Kowloon and secure the win. Credit must go to the whole team who showed ultimate commitment throughout to secure the vital win just before the international break.
Thank you very much to the Sandy Bay family who came down to support and we wish the 6 Hong Kong players from our club the best of luck as they look to qualify for the World Cup next year.
