The Herbert Smith Freehills HKU Sandy Bay RFU Vikings arrived at Kings park eagerly waiting to play against Natixis HKFC Dragons, in their first game of 2019. After the strong end to 2018, the Vikings had high hopes for the outcome of the match. Ian King led the Vikings with the usual onsomble, with the addition of Vikings debutants Benjamin Davis at number 8, Ed Nethersole at 12 and Yuseff Murphy and Luke Hayes on the bench, and Rory Cinnamond back at prop after returning from u20 National Duties. Vikings finally have a strong and full array of substitute players,
Vikings were early on the scoreboard with a penalty kick from Ed Nethersole, however Football Club hit back with two quick converted tries. The score was 6-28 at the half for Football Club, with two Vikings penalty kicks from Ed Nethersole. The second half saw tries from Jules Galley and William Tope, both converted by Ed Nethersole. However, the comeback from the Vikings was a little too late. With the final score of 20-54 for Football Club.
Unfortunately, Vikings players were pushed over the edge due to frustration and anger from a lack of control of the game from the referees. Resulting in two red cards received by Vikings players. With one player suspended for 1 week and another suspended for 5 weeks; sees him out of the remainder of the season. With such a poor start for Vikings, they will look towards keeping their discipline in future games. On a brighter note, improvements can be seen from all aspects of Vikings plays. The Vikings look forward to their clash with bottom of the table Kerry Hotel Kowloon Rugby 2 on the 12 of January back at King’s Park.
