Lionesses overcome early mistakes to breeze past HKFC 42-14

A rare Thursday night game at Kings Park was the setting of the first of two successive meetings between HKU Sandy Bay and the Hong Kong Football Club. Not sure if was the bright lights illuminating the field or if maybe someone smeared butter on the ball before the match, but both teams had trouble securing the ball in the first minutes, committing a number of knock-ons.

It was in the scrum, however, where Sandy Bay could show its class, dominating early and pushing the ball into the HKFC zone. For the first try, Number 8 Ahlia Koram took a pass and broke through the HKFC line near the side line, fending off HKFC to tackle her as she crossed the try line and put the ball down. Flanker Ella Snelgrove tacked on more points as she crossed the try line after another tough run. The scoring in the first half continued for Sandy Bay – as Ella Steenson burst through the line within the HKFC 22 for one of her trademark bruising runs for the 3rd try. For the 4th try, Darcey Rummun took advantage of a HKFC mistake to break free for a long run nearly untouched down the middle of the field to cross the line. 28-0 at the half for Sandy Bay - Grace Eathorne was a perfect 4 for 4 for the half and a 6 for 6 on the night for conversion attempts.

While HKFC were able to break the Lionesse's line for 2 long tries of their own in the second half, the outcome was never in doubt. Grace Eathorne and Darcey Rummun led the Sandy Bay attack, each securing a try to close out the game. Grace Eathorne was seemingly everywhere in the match, anticipating HKFC attacks and making key tackles, all the while showing off mesmerising passing and ball handling skills, and of course adding 12 conversion points with her consistent kicks. Along with Darcey Rummun whose speed and tough running from a back position, the Lionesses are dangerous and always a threat to score.

Unfortunately, the Lionesses did not escape the match unscathed as Team Captain Alisa Chelpanova suffered an ankle injury in the 2nd half of the match. The Team’s thoughts remain with their captain and everyone is hopeful for a speedy recovery. Sandy Bay will be back in action this coming Sunday in a return match at home and will be looking to sweep the series from HKFC. Up the Bay!
