A Crushing Defeat

After a week’s hiatus from league play, Sandy Bay U16 Boys took to the field recharged and ready to return to competitive action. Not only had they had the luxury to train last Sunday, but an extra training (on Tuesday) had also been squeezed in so as to further improve their preparations.

As it turned out, however, neither factor worked in Sandy Bay’s favour. At a bright and crisp EduHK pitch in Tai Po, Sandy Bay were dealt a bruising defeat by a team they had beaten in their first match of the season.

This season, records have been tumbling for many of the 2006-born boys in the team, and for all the wrong reasons. From being a team that had lost only a couple of times over three seasons, they were coming into this match having suffered league defeats this season to fiercest rivals HKFC and VF. On Sunday, another record fell as the 2006-born boys tasted defeat against SKS after an extremely long sequence of straight wins against them.

Ultimately, it was the team’s lack of depth that was brutally exposed by their opponents. The Sandy Bay boys started without three first-team starters (all older boys), and the resulting hole was simply too big to be filled. The balance of the team was upended. Combined with the positional changes the absences necessitated, Sandy Bay U16s just did not click and perform the way they should have.

SKS, on the other hand, came out with all guns blazing, hugely determined to avenge their narrow loss at the start of the season. This combination of factors saw Sandy Bay fall to a 38-7 loss, with the gulf between the two teams fairly reflected in the score line.

It is hard to see how the boys will pick themselves up from this devastating loss, and the game next week against the league’s only winless team should only be taken for granted as a guaranteed win at their own peril.
