McSorleys Match Report Marauders Vs Scottish By Preston Andrew Strength “Wello”.

Saturday the 26th Jan, saw two powerhouses of elite Hong Kong Rugby meet under ideal conditions at the infamous Sandy Bay Stadium (AKA The G) for a day of what promised to be champagne rugby.

Under the bright lights of the S.B.S., the men of Sandy Bay took to the field with the utter most confidence, in front of a swelling crowd of 17 punters plus the groundskeeper. Such was the intimidation of SB’s home crowd, that Scotland ‘the nay so brave’ turned up out enough props and we forced to field only 14 men.

Just the like our English forefathers before us, Sandy Bay wasted no time in capitalizing this advantage with utility forward Rodney ‘Rodders’ Chen, putting a try away in the first minute to lead 5-0. Minutes later, the forwards, doing all the work, were in again 10-0. With the momentum going Sandy Bay’s away Scottish, sensing they were up the bay without a paddle, went straight to bagpipes to call for help pulling in late arrival re-enforcements to cover our dominant rolling forwards. It didn’t matter. Seconds later, the piggy’s looking more like backs were in again 15-0. No need for conversion points here as Rhy “The Bulls-eye” Pinna-Griffith, purposely missed his kicks out of respect to the opposite’s circumstances. A clear gent of the game! 15 mins in, and the backs who had up until to this point been doing their hair, were now ready to contribute. Lawrence Rumble rocketed a cut out pass to Wello, who popped it back inside to star recruit Billy Brant for this first of 3 tries of the day – 20-0. Up on their line again, Jasmeet Guriel, who was clearly inspired, smelt blood from over 10mts away and attempted to ‘worm’ his way to the try line. The ref however was having none of this millennial nonsense and cautioned him for bad break-dancing. Seconds later however, Stephen Trainor made sure it was done putting the first (of his 3 of day) in on the wing and given much needed credibility to the backs. Rhy abandoning his pledge mercy, wasted no time converting the extra 2. From here, there were more meat pies than a Sheung Wan bakery with Rodders, Stephen and Billy all notching up additional tries to their quota. And so as we entered the second half 45-0, the Sandy Bay Marauders set to make a statement that they had arrived as team. The champagne was flowing and it appears everyone wanted a taste with man of match performances everywhere. Captain Matty Whitmell set the standard, looking more like Sunny ‘Bill’ Whitmell he tip-toed through a 40 metre carry fending off multiple tackles along the way. GB, finding inspiration did the same minutes later to cross the line with a breathtaking try. And finally, club captain Chief who was unlucky to be rewarded with the points as he powered through 4 defenders to be held up at the posts. But it was Dr Lewis who would get the honours, living up to the team’s namesake by marauding the ball at every breakdown, only to back up and lead several high impact pod runs. Final score: 67 (ish)-5. Try Scorers: Brant (3), Rodders (2), Stephen Trainor (3), Wello (1), GB (1) – Kicks (Rhys)
