Marauders brought the heat to the Gai Wu Blaze

The mighty Marauders arrived at Kings Park at midday on Saturday, happily basking in the warm autumn sunshine and content in the knowledge that they had the important back-up from a handful of their brothers from the Raiders pack. What the backs lacked in sideline support, was more than compensated by the pre-game resolve to “use our forward pack to win this game against Gai Wu”.

After the Ms captain won the coin toss and chose to kick, the 1pm kick off did not go to plan, with the young and energetic Gai Wu lads running straight through the entire Marauders pack to score a 5-pointer within the first minute of play. This served as a reminder to the entire Ms squad that defense and ball retention were going to set the stage for victory; the ensuing 68 minutes of play was an impressive display of pay-back rugby. The forward pack dominated at scrum time and (after some initial hiccups) the new “permanent X ball option” became a successful and necessary part of our line-out set piece. Huge note of thanks to the coaches who devised this awesome new weapon!

The end result of the match was a resounding Marauders victory, 43 - 12.
Point scorers were as follows:-

  • Rhys x 2 (4 conversions)
  • Harrison
  • Smetherham
  • Pete Budd (lesser Budd)
  • Mike 'Judge' Coates
  • Mark Stone

Man of the match was Mark Stone, who dominantly instructed his forward pack around every breakdown and helped guide the backs into positions of strength to score points out wide. Notable mention to Ali Jessup and Vic on huge games as well.
Massive effort by the forwards to lay the groundwork and huge thanks to our Raiders brothers for coming to support and play for the Ms.

The last dishonorable mention goes to our DOTD, Mr Kibble, who went out of his way to be no.8 for one scrum to “show you how this should be done when your forward pack is so dominant”... only to end the scrum on the ground with the ball between his feet and stolen by the Gai Wu breakaway. Thanks Kibs!
