Rugby teaches our kids skills that will stand them in good stead on and off the pitch

I am so keen to have my own kids involved in rugby from such a young age is so they build a strong sense of the fundamental values of the game: inclusion, respect and tolerance, integrity and sportsmanship, teamwork, excellence, and perseverance.
- Jenny

Many of you will already recognize Jenny who took on the role of acting Mini chair last season. Jenny was officially voted in as the Mini Chair at our AGM on July 8th. She has been involved with rugby off and on for 20 years, playing at university and then for Barnes RFC in West London where she was captain for two seasons. To add to that, Jenny is also a full-time working mum, with two children playing in U6 and U8, and is dedicated to giving her time to ensure the mini section remains one of the most successful in Hong Kong. Here are a few of her thoughts for next season.

What’s important for the mini section for next season?

The main thing for me, and I’m sure all the other parents will agree, is getting the kids back playing rugby and feeling part of a team again. Given how disrupted last season was, we hope to give them a more stable season where they can play the game they love, regain their fitness, confidence, and continue to develop their core rugby skills.

I am excited that we have already had a number of new players and families join the club and I am looking forward to welcoming them to the new season. I hope everyone, whether they are new to the club or have been with us for years, will enjoy the experience of being a member of the Sandy Bay family and will have the opportunity to create new friends and memories. That goes for the parents as well as the kids!

Why rugby?

One of the reasons I am so keen to have my own kids involved in rugby from such a young age is so they build a strong sense of the fundamental values of the game: inclusion, respect and tolerance, integrity and sportsmanship, teamwork, excellence, and perseverance. I am a strong believer that playing rugby teaches our kids skills that will stand them in good stead on and off the pitch and I hope that we will see them embody these values in their training, matches, and beyond.

What are your plans for the mini section this season?

I want to try to integrate the teams more, building on all the experience we have within the teams to help develop all our age groups further. We have a wealth of knowledge among our coaches, team managers, parents, and kids, and I would like to see how we can share that knowledge to grow each team and the whole minis section.

How can I be a part of it all?

Central to everything we do at Sandy Bay are the volunteers who drive things forward. I would love to see all our families getting involved in whatever way they can. We want to build a sense of community by working together to build a better club but we need your help to do that.
