Early momentum ebbs away in another agonisingly close game

The margin of victories in the Saxo Markets Premiership games so far has underlined just how competitive this season will be. Unfortunately, Sandy Bay were on the wrong side of a three-point margin on Saturday against a spirited and determined Borrelli Walsh Tigers side who, led admirably by skipper Joshua Hrstich, fought back to claim the spoils.
From the kick-off Sandy Bay appeared composed and in control of what would inevitably be a tight contest up front. A try from number 8 Luke van der Smit only compounded this view although Tigers were able to remain in touching distance through two penalties from fly-half Joshua Henderson.
To accuse Sandy Bay of complacency would be harsh, but there was definitely a more cautious, defensive-minded approach to their game once the second half got underway. Three games into the season have seen marked improvements in line-outs among other areas but a tendency to cough-up possession or give away penalties at crucial times affected Sandy Bay’s ability to build sustained pressure. Ultimately it was Tigers who were able to cross the line for a try which saw them take the lead for the first time in the game. Time was now against the Bay but with Tigers refusing to capitulate they were able to hold out for a well deserved win and leave Sandy Bay ruing their inability to begin the second half like they had the first.
On a positive note it was good to see Jamie Grist make his first start in Sandy Bay colours and it also gave debutant Tertius Kruger invaluable game time after not having played a match in over nine months. Although it was disappointing not to close out the game there were no alarm bells or glaring errors to fix, and hopefully a dose of collective introspection will see the team better able to emerge victorious from subsequent tight games as the season wears on.
