Scottish hold on at The Rock to to shut out the Bay

By Moses "Damian" Bailey

Hong Kong Scottish, taking on league newcomers HKU Sandy Bay, came out firing in the head to head and within minutes were out to a 10-0 lead. The Bay however, still looking for their first win, were jolted into action after a bone jarring collision between the not so small 110kg wingers, Connor ‘Melman’ Hartley and Marno ‘I’m not Heyneke’ Meyer, that seemed to shake the planet.

Once the dust had settled and the Earth’s rotation was back in sync, the Bay began to ramp up the intensity and started to take control of territory and possession. Three pinpoint penalties, by the ever reliant Jack ‘Mini’ Metters, reduced the deficit to one point.

The Bay were really purring now and started to boss the closing stages of the half. They were rewarded when a powerful surge from Matt ‘Lavish’ Lamming lead to a 7 pointer and a 16-10 lead going into the half.

The second period saw Scottish hit back with a try of their own and suddenly they were back in the mix, holding a slender 1 point lead, going into the final quarter. Another successful penalty from ‘Man Beast’ McNeish stretched the Scottish lead out to 4 points and all of a sardine, the Bay had to cross the white wash if they were to record their first ‘W’ of the season.

Desperate, the Bay bombarded the Scottish line...however Wallace’s men were not to be denied and grittily repelled all advances, finally grinding out a 20-16 win.
It was another case of so close, yet so far for the men from HKU Sandy Bay.
This week sees the boys from the Bay take on a ‘Leslie’ Tsang-less Kowloon team, before the international window sees a break in league play.
