U10G Games in Tai Po

U10G Games in Tai Po

Silvan Colani17 May 2021 - 05:33

Girls fight strong opponents, and summer heat, in Tai Po

If the period of strict restrictions from Dec 2020 to Mar 2021 was conspicuous for the complete absence of any rugby-related activity, the authorities must be commended for ensuring that mini rugby has been prioritized in the period since restrictions have been loosening, from April onwards.

In that vein, this past weekend saw the Sandy Bay U9/10 Girls travel to the Education University of Hong Kong, Pak Shek Kok Sports Centre, for a a few friendly games.

The morning began at 11 am at Sandy Bay with coach Silvan taking the girls through their paces with several team runs. It quickly became apparent to all present that the day was a scorcher: blinding sunshine, high temperatures, and a good dose of humidity to boot. Niskha's rubber sole detaching itself from the underside of her right shoe was testament—if any was needed—of how punishing the day was gearing up to be (thank you, Simon, for magically obtaining a replacement pair of rugby shoes instantaneously). The brief training session was characterized by many a water break—a pattern that needed to be a feature of the day.

Thereafter, the girls boarded a bus to Tai Po!

Humidity in Tai Po was a tad lower than it was in Sandy Bay, with a subtly stronger breeze. Given the burning temperatures, however, neither made much of a difference unfortunately.

The girls were divided into two teams—‘White’ and ‘Blues’—and each team was supported by a HKFC player to allow us to rotate a substitute on and off. Sadly, the two teams played on different pitches (one on grass and the other on AstroTurf), meaning that there were two 'bubbles' keeping each of our two teams apart for the duration of the tournament.

That physical distance notwithstanding, each of the two teams acquitted themselves commendably, especially given the conditions. Each of the teams’ three games were not only a test of rugby skill, but also a severe examination of stamina and the ability to stay strong under the sun! The Sandy Bay U9/10 ‘Whites’ drew one and lost two of their games, whereas the ‘Blues’ won two and lost one. From the 'Blues', Olivia Bannon's presence lifted the team tremendously, as she put in stellar performances across all three games, scoring a barrowload of tries. At Sandy Bay White, Isabella tackled like there is no tomorrow while Stella showed her skills and versatility with a number of great runs. Special thanks also to Audrey who helped out the 'Blues' after already playing with the boys in the morning.

Much credit must go to the coaches and players of both teams who had to not only face strong opponents, but also extreme weather conditions. Thank you, also to Sandy Bay Club—and head coach Silvan—for arranging the bus to and from the playing venue.
