Final

The final was as expected against the second-best team in the league – HKFC1.

A week ago, we smashed HKFC1 33-0 and I am not sure if this gave some players the false believe that this would be an easy match to win. If so – they were wrong.

HKFC came blazing from the first kick and it was very obvious that they believed they would be able to put up a fight. Very quickly we were behind 0-12. A surprise considering HKFC1 had only managed to score 1 try in the previous 2 league matches. Sandy Bay would have to dig deep to get back into the match. First a try from Tea McMahon followed by a conversion by Anna Chandler. 7-12 and it started to look like SB was getting back into the game. Unfortunately, we lost the concentration for a minute and HKFC ran up the left side making an easy try. They missed the conversion 7-17. Some might have started to doubt the girls could recover from this with only 8 minutes left on the clock. However, 2 tries from Anna Chandler and Samantha Wilkinson leveled the game 17-17.

The game went into extra time and the winner would be the team scoring first. As no team managed to score the winner was decided by “Scoring the first try” and unfortunately this was HKFC1. A very bitter way to finish an otherwise perfect season.

The girls should still be very proud of what they have achieved this season. Undefeated in 16 matches including pre-season, league, grand finals and a friendly.

This was the last match Jemima Keys played before moving to Australia later this week. Thanks for your always positive attitude towards your coaches and teammates and we hope to see you back in HK again during holidays. You will always be welcome at Sandy Bay. Let’s hope it is not a ‘Hooroo’ but a ‘see you later’.

Also, a sad farewell to our Social Manager Malcolm Keys. Thanks for always being willing to help when needed and for organizing the junk trip earlier this season. Don’t forget about us and I will certainly miss the energy you would bring to games and training.
