The HKU Sandy Bay Storm Women are giving it their all on and off the pitch this season and starting to come together really well as a team. Unfortunately, it was not enough to beat the Bloomberg HK Scottish Kukris last Saturday, October 20th. Although the Storm Women walked away with no victory they did walk away with hope for the future and a vision of the strong and competitive team they could become.
Chris Garvey, the Sandy Bay Storm Women's coach stated "We have new positions and new players but game by game we are improving." All in all the team played a really good game of rugby. There definitely were some slips ups on the pitch that day but there also was some great technique on the offensive side, strong tackles on the defense and a yearning to work hard for each other.
The folding and plugging was solid from the backs with the help and direction of the women's captain, Harriet Jamieson. Estelle Barbaroux, positioned on the wing, demonstrated some very strong defense as well. The first half of the game was looking promising for the Storm Women with some great effort to the try line thanks to the impressive offensive performances from Emma Chung, Lauren Peterson, Keri Roberson and their scrum half Eve Caplowe.. In the second half, the team started to lose some of their fire as the Scottish began to dominate by playing their offense wide and getting quite a few breakways that resulted in several tries.
The girls fought hard but in the end left the pitch with a 0-27 lost. They are putting that lost behind them now and feeling confident about their game against Borrelli Walsh Tigers 2, as they head into training, fixing the minor errors that cost them a win on Saturday. With such a great mix of veterans and newbies who knows what this team will be capable of. We are hoping for the best on October 27th and eager to see the women bring back the fire once again. Let's go Storm!
