In keeping with our club’s new start as HKU Sandy Bay Rugby Seniors the Premiership A team are retiring the Exiles name and turning over a new leaf as the Sandy Bay Vikings.
Inspired by our social squads the Raiders and Marauders, don’t be surprised if we see some cultural appropriation with a horned helmet themed event at some stage during the season.
New head coach Thierry Barot joins the club bringing some much needed Gallic flair and he’ll be assisted in mentoring the Vikings by former Force and Livestyle head, Jeremy Nesbitt.
Jez Nez has already been spotted displaying the height of antipodean fashion wearing a singlet and flip-flops during training sessions.
Club stalwart Ian King will skipper the squad, taking the helm of the longship to lead the Viking troops.
Recruitment has been significant and we are already seeing much better numbers at training than last year with average attendance in pre-season around 18 strong.
Significantly the recruitment has had a youth focus with the average age among our players dropping from 33 last year to 28 this season.
Our squad has seen new-joiners from other clubs as well as Sandy Bay Youth players graduating to the Senior ranks.
The Vikings are setting their sights high for the season and in building this team into a Premiership A force for years to come. Round 1 on the 29th of September cannot come quickly enough.
